What do you think of Alicorn OCs?

Someone mentioned putting Harry Potter through the basic test on a page that I came across while trying to find a more relevant test. He got a 79.
And I know what you mean with the crowding out thing. The amount of long lost twins and random new girlfriends for canon characters and grand-daughters of (the gay) Dumbledore I've had submitted as character requests on my sites would make JK Rowling punch walls. I have no intention of unleashing anything like that.
After a bit of research, I think I can explain most of the ability should a regular pegasus have it, but it is pushing it a little. Whereas for the average alicorn it would be a fairly normal, fairly basic thing to be able to do. Cadence could probably do it in her sleep, though in alicorn form my character's magic would be quite a lot weaker so she'd need to put a lot more effort into it. On the other hand I was planning to post the comics on deviantArt and viewers there can be rather ruthless. So now I'm rather torn between the two species. I'm not sure which of them would be closer to normality in a world like Equestria.
If a pegasus maybe had one alicorn parent would they be more likely to be able to have an additional ability? Would a regular non-unicorn/non-Magic Element bearer?
For example... Say Rainbow Dash as the bearer of Loyalty happened to have one alicorn parent and was able to do a particular task which involved rainbows which she already has a talent for producing and required both flight and a certain amount of magic. Clearly the flight would be her own, but would the magic that came with it be a part of having an alicorn parent or a part of being an Element bearer? Or would it just be an extension of her regular weather magic?
