I won't argue there's more material on Twilight. She was in every episode through episode 30 which was about as long as MLP and Friends in its entirety by minutes. She has been the focus of all four multi-part episodes. In fact, Twilight has at least a presence in about 60 full episodes plus all of Equestria Girls compared to 15 half-episodes and maybe fifteen minutes of the movie for Wind Whistler. (And Crunch the Rockdog is the only episode that really focused on her.) There was also more competition for screen time in MLP and Friends than Friendship is Magic, especially since Twilight is the main character. There better be more to Twilight because of how much time has been focused on her.
In my opinion, Wind Whistler's development was much more efficient than Twilight's. I think if Twilight only got the exposure Wind Whistler did, you wouldn't have much to say either. You also described events involving Twilight but not Wind Whistler.

I mentioned events involving Twilight because they were important to her character. Wind Whistler's big moment was Crunch the Rock Dog, which both of us have touched on a number of times, so I didn't think I needed to mention it. The rest of the time, Wind Whistler pretty much acted the same (the exception being in Mish Mash Melee). She approaches every situation the ponies come up against with calm rationale and is often the one to come up with good ideas, often having to go out on a limb for the other ponies along the way, perhaps moreso than any of the others, ever.
That's true. If Twilight was up against as many ponies for screen time Wind Whistler was, she might not be anymore developed than her. I won't argue that point. I also have no doubt I'd have several paragraphs worth to say if Wind Whistler got the exposure Twilight did. Eh, I think they both developed just fine. I just have to contest the notion that Twilight is a bad character or has been incompetently written.

I would sat Twilight is a bad character character or incompetently written. If anything, she's the character that relies the more on the substance of her character than the flare of her character on Friendship is Magic. I'm actually going to move this discussion into a different thread since it's off topic.

Im wanting to do a story about Vinyl Scratch/DJ-Pon3, a character noone knows anything about. Pretty much gonna be making it up as I go. Her name, her back story, her reasons, her family all of it. Will it be cannon? Nope. Do I really care? Nope
Point is, you use the characters the way you need them, how they talk how they interact what they do how the reader sees them are all based on what YOU want them to do. Dont worry about what others feel, if its not a story they want then they wont read it you will get those who do want to read your story.

This has gotten a little off topic. The reason I made this thread is because it seems like the MLP community doesn't appreciate writers who put work into storytelling.
Though, I haven't been following stories on Equestria Daily. They have standard, though it's still a lot of grimdark and shipping.

There are also a lot of non-dark and non-shipping stories, too. You can actually set the filter to take both of those elements out of the equation just read stories unrelated to the two, thankfully.

Also remember, you are not yet well known in the brony world of writing. I'm not that well known ether. All that is known about Sunstar the writer is that she can pull off a self insert pretty well. I don't have many stories out there ether. Don't give up.
The Fanfiction world that knows me the best is the Mario bros fanfiction. I am known as the author who built up Brighton and Twila from Game host characters into characters with depth. Brighton is actually rather similar to Celestia in that they both represent light, they both rule over a country, and they both have been around for over 1000 years. (Brighton has been around far longer at being well over 5 billion years old. Celestia probably not as long. I see her being around 5000 years old.)

My question is how do you gain notoriety without pulling the vulgarity or meme feeding card?

Keep writing stories in your chosen Fandom. Someone will find they enjoy your work and soon others will come. Don't expect to be the best right off the bat. Ask for criticism. Read and review other stories. Get your name out there.

Yes, what sunstar said, so, so much. Nothing worth doing ever came easily. You just have to keep working hard. You already have people who appreciate what you do, and more will come. Just keep holding out there, bud.

I was feeling better about the fandom and then I saw Smile HD. What kind of looney bin has built itself around me?

After spending time in a debate over the Ask Princess Molestia blog and listening to people say it's funny and well done, I'm just about ready to give up on this fandom and writing pony. I've written many stories, but they don't get any attention. I pour my heart and soul into developing the character's complexities beyond what they were in the G1 show to tell a compelling story about them. I develop the world both in the story and out so I have a set of ground rules to follow. I plan, I write, and all that work is ignored. Yet some tasteless bastard can turn Celestia into an abusive sex fiend and become a hit? He doesn't need to be funny at all, he just has to be obscene, and people come in droves to see it? He uses tired old cliches and over the top depictions of sexual abuse, and people call it hilarious? Is that what really sells in this fandom? And it's not just Molestia. It seems like shock fiction is what gets attention across the board. Ask Pinkamena Diane Pie is the same thing only with murder. And places like FiMfiction are laden with clopfics and grimdark. No one seems to write stories that even resemble the brand at all. I can't lower myself to do this kind of scrap. I could make Wind Whistler into Jack the Ripper, but I won't because I have standards. That probably wouldn't sell either because it would require complexity. Someone talk me down. I see wat are you pointing out. I mean thank to the fandom I even know what are those horrible things are when I never ever even read any of them. Speaking of that I still can't turn on the Everfree radio to listen to it without I hear the Rainbow factor and or the Pegasus Device songs. Seriously how did that come to Rainbow Dash the Element of Loyality bacame to an evil murdurer and killing yung pegasus foals like Scootalo to making Rainbows. OK, I see that there was a sudden big boom in the fandom whith the coming out of the G4 My little pony and suddenly everybody started or wanted to write fanfictions and the newer authors needed more and more extrem ideas to get readers but still before the FIM only Megan, Molly and Danny was visiting the ponies on Ponyland and there wasn't mutch Human in Ponyland fanfictions. I mean I only read a few ones on FF earlier before the FIM came out but than there was only about 10-15 pages (I mean the pages where you enter and from where you can open the fanfictions you chose to read) of fanfictions of MLP on the FF while now there are hundreds of pages and there are plantly of Human in Equestria like if everybody want to go to Equestria to meet with the ponies of tha show or do more R34 stuffs with them. There are also here those tumlrs too. There are hundreds or maybe a few tousends of them and just a few of hem are really good still I like to browsering between them. A quite fresh statistic I found not long ago: In July there was about 33 different Scootaloos on the tumblr and not all of them had their own tumblr page: life-of-scootaloo.tumblr.com/post/91408415801/lunaboticmod-the-great-scootaloo-conglomerationToo bad there are not any ask and/or story tumblrs about the G1 and G3 ponies expet tumblr's like Heck yea pony scans by Moondancer. I can't help but I wonder what kind of tumblrs would be on the internet if they would existed about 6-8 years ago.

*sigh* If ONLY the internet existed back when G1, Friends and Tales aired. I bet they would have been more popular, more would have been made, and we would have more stuff to do... )8'(

MLP 'n Friends had the bad luck of both The Transformers and G.I. Joe puking and vomiting in 1986. Hasbro lost their shirts on the MLP (because they couldn't bother to make it interesting) and Transformers (because they over invested on a shift that went over with fans like a lead balloon) movies. The new directions of Transformers and G.I. Joe pissed the fans off and traumatized the kids. MLP 'n Friends chugged along, but it was at the bottom of the funding list and the execs figured the show for little girls wasn't worth it if their two boys shows were headed to cancellation.
I think Tales suffered from the brand being at the end of its life. That, and the Disney Channel started getting rid of repeats of old cartoons so they could become Beuna Vista's dumping ground.
Really, MLP broadcast media had been the victim of corporate stupid through G1's life.
