Okay since A1 has done a review on the old series I figured that I'd do a review of the series from My little pony to Friendship is Magic (will do those in the other sections) and everything in between. This isn't gonna have videos unfortunately since the whole copywright on youtube its a written review. So to start it off I am going with the very first special: Rescue from Midnight Castle. Enjoy.
Rescue at Midnight Castle Review:
Back in the day I watched this episode and thought "Hey a show about horses" and I was half right. Its a show about little ponies. Anyway the episode starts out with a theme that would later be revised into the show's theme. We see of course the main ponies of the episode as the intro begins. By the way if you want to see my revised episode of this read "Christine comes to Ponyland". So anyway back to the review. Firefly is our adventurous pony who apparently does something that Medley thinks is dangerous. This is a funny scene since she hits the basket of apples that Applejack was picking. Which gets everyone giggling. Anyway we get to see a few ponies before we see the Stratadons which to me were scary as a kid. But it makes sense since they are the followers of Tyrak. We also see another follower who is named Scorpan. Firefly then decides to go find help. The scene shifts to Scorpan and a baby dragon named Spike who talk to Tyrak. Interesting how they didn't change his look but what his power is in FiM. We then go to a scene where Megan sees a shooting star which is Firefly. Then we see a funny scene with her coming out of the well. Seems as if Megan isn't sure about what she can do for her friend. Firefly starts our first song of this special "Dancing on Air". Anyway they land in Ponyland and Firefly tells everyone that Megan is their only hope which is sketchy because she didn't really know what she was getting into. Megan of course is captured but let free and told this isn't her fight. She gets mad and tries to stop Scorpan. Brave? Foolish is more like it. Back to the ponies who are now captured. Tyrak tells them that Ember is too small. He then turns them into monsters. He then tells Scorpan he had better get that fourth pony or Spike's head is his. Back to the others and Applejack falls off the bridge which brings us to our next set of ponies. The Sea Ponies. These ponies are always the backup for some songs. They sing "Call upon the sea ponies" which is our second song of this movie. They enter the Mushromp and meet an elf/gnome who is not very good at keeping things. He lost the rainbow of light somewhere. He sings our third song "Little Piece of Rainbow" while looking for it. Habbit knows where it is. He always knows things the Moochick has lost. Of course he'd leave it with Habbit. Anyway they go to midnight castle. Megan calls the seaponies with the seashell they gave her when they met them. Back to Scorpan and Tyrak. A follower tells Tyrak that there are more ponies. Scorpan goes to let Ember out. Applejack is grabbed and now becomes a monster and now the chariot is complete. Scorpan tries to help them and they run outside. But before they can go back inside Tyrak comes out and tries to bring in the night that never ends. Firefly tries her trick again and works for awhile. Bowtie? That's not Bowtie its Firefly. Tyrak gets the rainbow of darkness back but Megan sends out the rainbow of light which doesn't do anything but when all hope seems lost the rainbow fights back and destroys Tyrak and turns everyone back to normal. Scorpan turns out to be a prince. Oh sure laugh at Ember.
Good points:
-The songs were great
-The plot stayed true to what we expect in future episodes
-The villain was pretty cool.
Bad points:
-First of all why have a character who loses stuff all the time as the carrier of the rainbow of light? I get it. He's supposed to be comedy relief but still.
-The whole "If by midnight my chariot is not ready a head will roll, his" is kinda scary. This is supposed to be a kid's show.
-Megan being the one to help them. Okay that isn't a bad thing but for crying out loud the ponies could fight. Look at the episode "The Prince and the ponies" and you'll see what I mean.
-The followers and the monsters the ponies turn into were a bit too scary if you ask me.
Anyway not a bad episode for a pilot but there are some parts not suitable for kids. The episode gets a 9.5/10. Stay tuned for my "Escape from Catrina" review.
