Well, we're finally getting a full length animated My Little Pony feature and...I'm not all that excited about this. I'm excited about the idea, but not the early decisions so far.
First, if Meghan McCarthy's tweet is to be believed, this is will be a Friendship is Magic movie starring the Mane 6. This raises red flags for me from both a business and story perspective.
From the business perspective, the Transformers Movies have always been a boon to the toys as they feature new characters Hasbro is putting out. If this movie is about the Mane 6, then it plays right into the main weakness of the G4 line which is a lack of variety.
From the story perspective, this movie is planned for a 2017 release. That's three years which is an eternity in show business to bank on characters still being relevant. Even after just four years these characters are starting show their age (especially Pinkie Pie) and it's a gamble for minimum gain to tie the movie to them. We also have to assume they and their world can make the big leap to cinema. This can't just be a longer episode with a bigger budget.
My other concern is choice of writer (because it's not me ). Joe Ballarini has been tapped to pen the script and his resume of cinematic writing is Dance of the Dead, Father vs. Son, and ghostwriting on Ice Age: Continental Drift. Nice, Allspark. You couldn't get Linda Woolverton and someone else with more fantasy experience. I could probably write better than this guy, but I'm an unknown stuck in Michigan.
So, happy we're getting a movie, not happy with the early decisions.
