I've discovered my preferred approached to G1 My Little Pony is not trying to play the canon provided to us straight (there are so many sources it's kind of hard), but rather take some of the facts and stick them in there differently to form a new canon.
Case in point, in the episode "The Golden Horseshoes", Mimic is descended from a unicorn from the land of Argyte and brought to Dream Valley by a storm. Well, in my continuity, the ponies are originally from a land called Argyte. It is a stormy land in the subarctic with a climate similar to the Shetland Islands. The story is, their population had reached a point they could not produce enough food to sustain it. The answer was to magically terraform their land to a climate more conducive to agriculture. However, the magic they used proved unstable and went out of control. It created storms that destroyed their infrastructure and killed a large majority of their population. Worse, waste energies from the magic altered the soil rending it incapable of supporting most edible plant life. Their kingdom destroyed and their land barren, the surviving ponies broke up into bands and left Argyte in search of new homes. One of those bands is led by Queen Majesty and her council of princess ponies.
What do you think of this origin of the ponies of Dream Valley?

Another idea is to suggest Megan is actually not from earth. She is from this world and the ponies come from another.
