Before I begin with fanfic I think I need to pull out the Cliffnotes version of my ponyverse.
Ancient History
Ponyland was once big. I mean REALLY big. You're talking the entirety of the continent of Europe in my Ponyland. Although HQT may have had a high queen of all the equine lands for most of written time (there were occsaional periods of war that were never dwelled upon) in my version of the history of the MLP world it's just not that feasible.
All land equines had a very gypsy-like existance in the distant past. Long before Dream Castle was ever constructed, most ponies lived a rather clannish life and moved from place to place. Basically wherever food, water and shelter was plentiful. Leaders where whoever best served the needs of the clan. All your major pony breeds existed; earthlings, unicorns, butterfly winged, pegasi, flutters and Clydesdales.
There were plenty of stories and fables on how each pony breed came to be. Like some huge dagon terroized all of the ponies so some unicorns took one male volunteer from a herd of earthlings to magically craft a larger, stronger and heftier pony i.e. the first Big Brother pony (Clydesdale) to protect all the others. Or that a earthling had wished so hard on a night star that she could fly like the birds that she became the first pegasus.
But the truth was that each pony was just naturally (well- naturally for a magical land) well suited for a specific task or life style. Flutter ponies, like humming birds, require large amounts of energy rich food to propel them on their gossimer wings, so they just naturally became slender, smaller and lived near warm plains areas rich in plantlife that sustained them.
Butterfly ponies (Windy and Summerwing ponies) found that living in the trees and feeding on their fruits was the better existance, so they remained as small as a baby pony and developed large delicate wings to help them glide through thick forests.
But the major population of Ponyland was still the main four: earthlings, pegasi, unicorns and Clydesdales. They were best adapted to go everywhere and that is exactly what they did. They went EVERYWHERE.
In early equine history no one had hip symbols (or 'cutie' marks in the last generations) and there were plenty of shapes and sizes of ponies as there were as many colors.
This is kind of where fakies come in. They aren't true MLPs but they fill in as background material, like the ponies in the 'Bright Lights' series of episodes of the animated series. None of the ponies in the villages looked like MLPs, so I just sort of assumed they were like fakies when you think of them from a toy perspective. I thought alot of about my toys as a child. ;D
Then at some point, some time in the history of Ponyland a sizable group of ponies stumbled upon a giant crystal.
It was a big piece of light reflecting crystal, as big as any average earthling! It was an amazing find. The facets reflected light with all the colors of the rainbow.
And it became a thing of worship. The equines already saw the sun, rain and rainbows as things to revere. This stone seemed to encompass all those things! The Heart of Ponyland, it was dubbed.
Word of the find spread through the lands. Other clans met up to see the Heart of Ponyland. They began to craft a magnificent structure to honor the stone, hold it high to sun so that it reflected light down on all observers.
Unicorns were delighted with it. They found that their magical talents seemed to grow stronger when the stone was near.
Over time ponies began to settle around the Heart of Ponyland. The valley it was located within was lush and easily supported all the equines that had come to see this remarkable stone.
But not just ponies had heard of the giant crystal. Creatures from all over the surrounding lands wanted to see this potentially valuable gem. The ponies were all to happy to share their stone with all of the world, but there were greedy individuals who thought to take it from the ponies.
Afterall, they just worshipped it. The ponies had no idea that a gemstone was valuable to some creatures.
After some attempts to outright steal the stone, the ponies thought that maybe they should encase the stone in a fortress so that none could ever steal it.
A stone palace began, unicorns wielding their magic to make the rock transparent, so that light could still reach the Heart and everyone could still see it's brilliance in sunlight.
When completed the Crystal Castle was a magnificent sight. Glistening in the light of the sun it became a symbol for all of Ponyland. Six guardian ponies were chosen to protect the Heart of Ponyland. One unicorn, one pegasus and four earthlings (to represent the ratio of breeds to each other- earthlings far outnumbering all the others). Each was given a wand, crafted with power from the Heart of Ponyland, to grant them special magics.
This arrangement did not sit well with the butterfly and flutter ponies. They were not as adaptable to the grasslands living as the other, more common, ponies. Eager to keep everyone happy a compremise was reached. The guardians used their power to craft two smaller, yet similar stones to the Heart of Ponyland.
The first was the Sunstone, given to the flutter ponies so that their flower gardens would bloom eternally.
The second was gifted to the butterfly ponies, the Earthstone, so that their trees would grow tall and become laden with fruit.
The arrangement was more than satisfactory. Both groups quietly took their own stones home, which help their breeds flourish but also had the negative side effect of seperating them from their other equine kin for centuries.
But all this was still not enough to protect the Heart of Ponyland. War was inevitable, it always is. Greedy humans, trolls and other intelligent creatures went to battle the ponies.
It was long and dark time in Ponyland. War ravaged the grasslands and those that did not die in battle succumbed to famine. Those that survived retreated to the Crystal Castle and begged for hep from the guardians, like they had helped the flutters and butterflies.
The land surrounding the Crystal Castle never felt seasons chance, the grasses were always green and sweet. The water always pure. Though many had tried to penetrate it's walls, none succeeded.
The guardians had made a decision. Using their magics they did two things. First, they sacrificed their beautiful lands and transformed the surrounding area into a desert, blessing the neighboring land that was to be later named Dream Valley. That was where all the little ponies were to dwell. Second, they declared that no other lives would ever be lost for the Heart of Ponyland. The ground beneath the Heart opened, and the earth itself swollowed the Heart of Ponyland. It was to be gone forever.
When the ponies chose to destroy their beloved Heart of Ponyland for the good of all, the stone itself radiated one last time before disappearing in the cold ground. A giant rainbow appeared, arching over all the lands were the little ponies dwelled. That rainbow created the symbols that where from that moment forward on the sides of each My Little Pony. It granted the Guardians unique bejeweled symbols, and they became princesses.
More Recent History
Opening scene: Medley and Firefly sliding down the rainbow at the falls in the first MLP special.
My version of Ponyland is basically an exstension of the animated series, with Megan and Firefly and the whole cast of characters. Pegasi do what they do, unicorns do what they do and everyone has at least some talent that they are good at. Even the earthlings.
The princess ponies have no idea that they are simply descendents of guardians of the Heart of Ponyland, most of those tales had never been written down and very few ponies actually take it as serious history. Just bedtime stories to tell the baby ponies at night.
This is the time in which most of my fanfic takes place. After the original series has taken place. I even have a work-in-progress on how the ponies were finally rid of Megan and her annoying siblings. It involves an elven prince. ;D
Some things are slightly different, like there are more STALLIONS around other than the six Big Brothers (12 with the Adventure Boys), but females still vastly outnumber the males. Medley herself has a twin brother named Clef. The only way you can tell them apart is that Clef has a much shorter mane and tail than Medley. Majesty is also the queen of Dream Valley. Chief is her son. Since he's the most eligable bachelor in the whole valley Chief isn't seen much. He's either hiding in Dream Castle or out adventuring with the boys. FAR AWAY from any mares looking for a lifemate.
Future Times
My Little Pony Tales is the far future version of what Ponyland looks like. I have partially written facfic about that, that I may finish one of these days.
I'm not sure were G3s fit into my ponyverse. They might be some alternate universe ponies, or maybe equines from an undiscovered land. I just don't know yet.
EDIT: It would be nice if I spelled 'Earthstone' correctly.
